RESPONDING TO THE CRISISDateline: March 08 2010
Students at All Hallows have raised an incredible sum of just under £9000 for charity in the last 3 months. It all began with the annual Advent appeal, which was focused on the CRISIS organisation which helps the homeless in London. Mr Rees gave a series of powerful assemblies on the topic and asked the students to try to raise £2000. Every tutor group responded to the challenge and their efforts took the final total well above the target to just under £3000. Mr Russell Sedman, who is one of the Community Ambassadors who represent CRISIS, attended Year 8 assembly to receive a giant cheque from 6th form student Emily Ainge. She had been very active, with other members of her tutor group, and their tutor Mrs Rice, in raising £167 towards the total. Their programme included a sponsored sleepover in the 6th form common room. Mr Sedman spoke to the audience of Year 8 students, who themselves raised over £500 towards the total, and said he was overwhelmed by the amount of money the school had raised. The students listened attentively as Mr Sedman told them how he had spent years on the streets himself, until his life had been turned round through the help of others. He explained that Crisis enables people to have another chance and to receive training and support to get back into everyday life. Mrs Lutzeier, Headteacher, thanked Mr Sedman and the students, and commented that giving to others who need help is a key part of being a Christian and following the teachings of Jesus. Hardly had the students of All Hallows finished fund-raising for Crisis, when news broke of the terrible tragedy in Haiti. Although it was well before the school’s usual Lent fund-raising time, the decision was taken to once again call upon the generosity of the students to see if they could raise another £2900. This time the response defied all expectations, with staff and students devising ingenious ways to collect money for such a vital cause, ranging from sponsored exercises to cake sales The outcome with money still coming in, is a staggering total of just under £6000! Deputy Head Mr Bird said “ Our students have always shown great generosity in helping others, but these appeals have really caught their imagination. I can hardly believe that nearly £10,000 has been raised, but our school Mission statement stresses the importance of showing love and respect to others and I can’t think of a better way of putting that ideal into practice.” |
